Extended Scar Road
If you’re looking for some breathtaking trail riding, you simply can’t afford to miss this one. For your riding pleasure, we’ve gone out and connected the two best trails in the Kathmandu Valley and created this amazing trip. The Scar Road is considered the best biking route in the valley and follows the old forestry trail through the Western part of the Shivapuri National park. The Helipad, on the Eastern part of the National Park, is the most popular training trail for the country’s professional XC riders who frequently use it to polish up their technical skills. The trail starts from Kakani, a picturesque hilltop town that offers beautiful mountain views, and ends at Budhanilkanatha, a popular pilgrimage site on the outskirts of Kathmandu city.

Day by day itinerary
KATHMANDU - KAKANI (2,040M) - GURJE BHANJYANG - NAGI GUMBA - BUDHANILKANTHA (1,305M): Distance: 32 KM drive, 27 KM ride. Elevation Gained: 1,310M on car, 720M on bike. Total Time: Approx 6 Hrs (1 Hr Drive, 5 Hrs Ride)
After breakfast, we load the bikes on a 4x4 and exit Kathmandu through the west side. After driving uphil for about an hour past the Nagarjun National Park, we reach the picturesque town of Kakani. There we unload the bikes and start riding on a 500m gentle downhill past a few cottages to the Ranger’s hut - the entry point into the Shivapuri National Park where we purchase the park permit and get ourselves registered. We then ride up a technical incline on a narrow forest trail for about 40 minutes to get up to 2,210M - the highest point of this ride, after which we ride down a breathtaking trail through the Shivapuri jungle with majestic views of the Himalayas popping out on the left every now and then. After about an hour of super-exciting trail riding, we join a rocky jeep track that runs through the park. We ride past Gurje Bhanjyang - an 1800m pass used by many travellers to travel down to the Trishuli Valley, and towards Dada Gau. After about 5 KM of steady pedalling, we leave the jeep track and ride an awesome 40 minute segment of awesome singletrack riding. At the end of this trail, we join another rocky road and climb for about half an hour at a steady grade up to Nagi Gumba. We go past Nagi Gumba and up to Tarebhir where we get off the jeep track and ride down a trail that goes straight down through the famed Helipad and into the Kathmandu Valley. The last section of this trail is very technical and challenges even the most skilled trail rider, so extreme caution should be applied. At the end of this segment, we cruise down a paved road towards the Park Village Resort at Budhanilkantha for Lunch. Here we get picked up by our 4x4 here and drive back into the city.
